Maria Juanita - Original
La Infanta Maria Juanita borrows the stillness of a court portrait and carries it into a psychedelic garden. The work echoes Mariana of Austria, queen consort of Philip IV of Spain, whose formal portrait by Diego Velázquez was commissioned by the king and is now held at the Prado Museum in Madrid. Pablo Etchepare turns that royal lineage inside out: monumental brown hair frames a wreath of cannabis flowers, the red eyes sharpen the gaze, and ceremonial composure meets the irreverence of a botanical hallucination. There is no crown here. Plant, colour and attitude take its place. An original acrylic on canvas, La Infanta Maria Juanita transforms the authority of historical portraiture into a pop, botanical and quietly rebellious apparition.
