"DEFORESTATION"

Artist: Fernando Berg
This painting is a reinterpretation of Candido Portinari's 1938 work "Forest III," in which he depicted the Brazilian fauna. In this reimagining, I aimed to bring the scene to our present day, painting it as an extinct forest, with little space left for animals and plants.
The marsh deer and the scarlet ibis are portrayed as entities, acting as protectors against deforestation and wildfires. The deer faces the viewer (us), while the ibis, with open wings, blesses and watches over the others. In the background, there are dry, cut-down trees and the skeletons of animals that once roamed freely in Portinari's original painting.
In the middle stands the giant anteater, adorned with a crown of butterflies. Below, the collared peccary is seen entering the space between the bird's wings. The bird at the bottom remains unidentified, but I kept its form as Portinari depicted, seemingly based on various bird species.
